STAR APARTMENTS IN
LA WEEKLY & GIZMODO

Michael Maltzan Architecture’s newly completed Star Apartments in downtown Los Angeles was named one of LA Weekly’s “10 Biggest L.A. Architecture Stories of 2013″.  The LA Weekly highlighted the project’s elevated ” cluster of housing and community spaces that offer light, views, breezes, and relief from the stank of the street.”  The six-story structure which is MMA’s third collaborative project with the Skid Row Housing Trust includes 102 studio apartments for the homeless population.  Completed in December 2013, the project incorporates individual prefabricated units placed on a new structural platform over a renovated single-story commercial building.

The project was also included in Alissa Walker’s article for Gizmodo that names “7 Smart New Affordable Housing Projects Making Cities Stronger.”  Citing examples from across the country, Walker commended the Star Apartments for its innovative use of prefabricated units to reduce both development time and construction costs.
