STAR APARTMENTS
PREFAB UNITS PLACED ONSITE

MMA’s Star Apartments have reached an important project milestone:  individual, prefabricated apartment units have arrived onsite and are being craned into place.  Unit stacking began in early December and all units will be in place by mid-January.  From trucks at street level, a total of 102 units will be hoisted into position on the new concrete structural podium.  The Skid Row Housing Trust hosted two events in December to mark this exciting project milestone.  A third event will be held in January to mark the completion of the unit stacking phase.

The 97,000 square-foot Star Apartments building repurposes a former single-story retail building in downtown Los Angeles by adding a new structural podium to support a second story community space and four levels of residential units above.  In addition to providing 102 efficiency apartments for homeless individuals, the project will include 15,000 square feet of multi-purpose open and program spaces including onsite social services, community rooms, a shared kitchen, jogging track, basketball court, gym, art room, library, and community gardens.  It is the first multi-unit housing project for homeless individuals to utilize prefabrication in the City of Los Angeles.  Star Apartments is the third collaboration between MMA and the Skid Row Housing Trust.  It will be completed in the summer of 2013.
