10900 WILSHIRE

10900 Wilshire is an existing 17-story, office high-rise located in Westwood at the highly trafficked corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Westwood Boulevard.  Having not been touched since its construction in the 1980s, the client charged MMA with reconceptualizing the interior to reposition the building.  The front plaza and lobby was reimagined as a new cleansing experience: a broad stone plaza serves as a plinth for a large Will Ryman sculpture (Icon, 2011) and directs visitors to the lobby.  On the interior, the height of the ceiling is augmented by the radiused corners that create an abstract depth.  A custom chandelier comprised of an irregular grid of white fluorescent lamps drifts across the ceiling and the reception desk floats above the new wood flooring.  At the perimeter, wood screens constructed from the same oak as the flooring obscure the adjacent tenant spaces while adding to the expansive quality of the lobby.

The new experience continues into the elevator lobbies from the mezzanine to the 17th floor.  The wood flooring and radiused ceilings continue the lobby design and the series of surface mounted fluorescents create a pattern that anchors the space.  Doorways leading into the tenant spaces have an inlaid wood entry mat matching the elevator lobbies and restrooms have white solid surface and wood accents to create a new cohesive experience.
