290 COLONY STREET HOUSING
DEBUTS IN WINNIPEG

MMA’s design for the 290 Colony Street Housing debuted in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 23, 2019. The 119-unit mixed-income housing project for the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC2.0) will be located at the corner of Colony Street and St. Mary Street, across from the firm’s Winnipeg Art Gallery Inuit Art Centre project that is currently under construction. The 14-story building will include studios and one, two, and three bedroom apartments with resident amenities on the 10th floor.

When speaking about the new project, Design Principal Michael Maltzan noted: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation on the 290 Colony Street project. We recognize that this is an important project not only for the University of Winnipeg but the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. By working closely with the UWCRC, the design aims to create inviting, human-scaled spaces for residents and visitors, spaces that engage the urban context and are a vibrant addition to the neighborhood.”

The project, also known as the Arts District for its proximity to the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the emerging arts precinct, will include both apartments and art-making facilities for local and visiting artists. Commercial space on the ground floor will provide additional resources for building residents and the surrounding community. This building’s mixed-use program continues the UWCRC’s effort to revitalize the university-district.

The 290 Colony Street design and construction team is led by design architect Michael Maltzan Architecture, local architect Cibinel Architecture, and Bockstael Construction. The building will be completed in 2020.
